TSC Salaries, T- Scale For Junior Secondary School Teachers and Principals

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has finally released the salaries for some Junior Secondary School teachers. The affected teachers were posted to work in various public schools across Kenya more than three months ago but some are yet to receive their salaries.

Details have also emerged indicating that the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, did not do a spot check on the credentials and qualifications of former primary school heads who were deployed to serve as principals before dispatching deployment letters.

Those who will be deployed to handle learners in junior secondary schools will start at job grade C2 at a basic salary scale of sh 34,955 at a minimum and sh 43,694 at a maximum per month. They will automatically be moved to job grade C3 upon completion of three years as stipulated in CPG.

Here is the TSC Salary Scale For newly deployed JSS Principals

  1. Basic salary 34,955
  2. House allowance (other areas) 7,500
  3. Hardship allowance of 10,900
  4. Commuter allowance of 5,000
  5. Leave allowance (paid only in January) 6,000

Using its various social media channels, the TSC announced that the application period for the deployment of primary school teachers had been reopened and would continue through March 22nd. The Commission is governing body for teachers in Kenya and sets the salaries for teachers in the country.

The teachers who are under TSC also get several allowances, such as housing, commuter, and risk allowances. These allowances can significantly increase a teacher’s monthly earnings, making their total monthly salary more substantial.

TSC teachers also receive benefits such as medical insurance, gratuity, and pension which are funded by the government. The new salary scale for teachers who will teach in Junior Secondary Schools in the competency-based curriculum has been revealed by the teachers’ employers.

There has been a lot of concern about who will handle learners in junior secondary schools in grades 7, 8, and 9. The Teacher Service Commission (TSC) has finally settled on the category of teachers to teach in junior secondary and their new salary scale.

According to TSC primary school teachers with various higher academic qualifications and who have not yet secured promotion as per the Career Progression Guidelines (CPGs) will be given priority to handle learners in grades 7, 8, and 9 in junior secondary schools.

According to the Status Report on Teacher Preparedness for Competence-Based Curriculum Implementation, the commission said that P1 teachers who have a diploma in education and above will be deployed to handle learners in junior secondary schools.

Currently, TSC only deploys primary school teachers with Bachelor’s degrees in Education (Secondary option) to teach in secondary schools. To be deployed to teach in secondary schools a teacher must have attained at least a mean grade of C+ in KCSE in the two teaching subjects.

Those who will be deployed to handle learners in junior secondary schools will start at job grade C2 at a basic salary scale of sh 34,955 at a minimum and sh 43,694 at a maximum per month. They will automatically be moved to job grade C3 upon completion of three years as stipulated in CPG.
