TSC Begins Replacement of 2,000 Teachers Interdicted for Seeking Transfers from North Eastern.

On Monday, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) declared that the process of replacing the 2,000 teachers who had been interdicted for seeking transfers from North Eastern had already begun.

TSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nancy Macharia announced in Mombasa, Kenya, at the onset of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations that the incoming group of teachers would be stationed in the counties of Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa.

Non-local educators in the North Eastern region, alleging insecurity as the reason for their refusal to report to their workstations, compelled the recruitment.

Macharia noted that in order to avert a recurrence of the circumstance, the commission pursued qualified tutors from the North Eastern region.

“Today, if you are a teacher in Northern Kenya, get a form from a County Education Director and start teaching,” she stated.

Additionally, the head of the TSC stated that the teacher recruitment exercise was only open in the North Eastern region.

Although Macharia stated that local teachers would be given preference, she also encouraged teachers with expertise from other regions of the country to submit their applications.

She specifically emphasized the scarcity of qualified teachers specializing in Islamic religious education and physics in the area.

Furthermore, Macharia pointed out that the teachers who had received interdiction letters remained suspended due to their dereliction of duties.

The CEO also mentioned that the commission was conducting an investigation to ascertain the reasons why the interdicted teachers had sought transfers from North Eastern. He assured that their cases would be addressed in accordance with the correct procedure.

Mass demonstrations were organized by the interdicted teachers at the TSC headquarters in Upperhill, Nairobi, on October 16.

Police officers subjected them to tear gas as they attempted to gain an audience with high-ranking TSC officials, including Macharia, the CEO.
