National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is a state corporation established under the National Insurance Fund Act, number 9 of 1998. Prior to this legislative reform the Fund existed as a department under the Ministry of Health since 1966. The Fund is mandated to facilitate access to quality healthcare through strategic resource pooling and healthcare purchasing in collaboration with stakeholders. NHIF works to secure financial risk protection against the cost of healthcare services for all Kenyan residents through prudent financial management of resources contributed by members both from formal and Informal sector of the economy.

In line with the Government’s initiative on Youth Capacity Development, NHIF provides few industrial attachment opportunities to ongoing students as part of their training and internship for those who have graduated to prepare them for the job market.

Industrial Attachment

The Fund offers three months industrial attachment to continuing students at Degree/ Diploma/ Certificate level from recognized institutions across its branch networks and departments. Being part of the learning process, the attachees are supported to ensure successful learning and subsequent learning evaluation.

The successful applicants must be available for the three months duration of the attachment and must strictly adhere to their terms of engagement as per letter of offer. Attaches work under the guidance of senior employees who guide them on the day-to-day operations. Attaches do not quality for any monetary payments.

How to apply

Attachment opportunities are provided either at the branch offices or the departments within the head office. Applications for attachment are decentralized to branch networks and those for the departments are centralized within the Human Resource function. Those wishing to undertake their attachment at the Fund are encouraged to apply to respective branch manager or Director of Human Resource and Administration whichever is applicable.

All attachment applications must be accompanied by a reference letter from the University/College of study.

Internship

A few internship opportunities may be offered to holders of University degree/Diploma in relevant fields to gain hands on experience and develop key employability skills. The internship offered is for a period of six months non-renewable.

The successful applicants must be available for the six months duration of the internship and must strictly adhere to their terms of engagement as per letter of offer. Interns work under the guidance of senior employees who guide them on the day-to-day operations.

Application Process

Those wishing to undertake their attachment/internship at the Fund and meet the requirements are encouraged to submit their applications to the Director of Human Resource and Administration. The applications will be placed in our database to be considered as and when the opportunities become available. The Fund currently takes interns in January and June of every year.

  • Selection process is based on Relevance of the study area, Gender, disability and regional balance. Canvasing automatically lead to disqualification.
  • The Fund does not guarantee employment whatsoever at the end of attachment/internship programmes
  • Should be unemployed Kenyan citizen.
