Appleton Kindergarten and Montessori school

It is with pleasure that we introduce Appleton Kindergarten and Montessori School located in Nairobi. Our school was founded in January 2008. Our Programs include day care, pre-primary and primary school. We offer a caring , nurturing and safe enviroment for children to learn. We aim to develop children with knowledge, skills, attitudes and character to ensure their success.

Day Care: Age 2 – 4 years

In this class, children are encouraged to learn through observation, communication and manipulating objects. This gives the learner a sense of acceptance, encouragement and accomplishment and makes learning fun. These inspired activities help to promote self-sufficiency.

The activities here includes;-

  1. Devotion and circle time – This includes praying, singing, dancing, telling bible stories, introduction and greetings.
  2. Language – Introduction to sounds, letter formation, naming and reading pictures, sticking sounds, feeling sounds
  3. Number work – Recognition of numbers, Introduction to counting 1-5, sticking numbers, feeling and painting numbers, Number sequencing, reviewing numbers
  4. Basic training – This is self-care which includes washing and drying hands, toileting, greetings people, using a handkerchief, handling projects in class, role playing
  5. Practical life – Children are taught how to zip, button, buckle and tie, rolling a mat, pouring, transferring objects with tongs, opening and closing doors, kneading
  6. Sensorial – Touch tablets and fabrics, pink towers, long stairs ,broad stairs, colour boxes 1 and 2. This helps in differentiating sizes and weight, how to hold his or her fingers with the small cubes, how to grasp the largest cube, controlling arms and fingers so that tower doesn’t fall, and has the good feeling of completing the task.
  7. Culture – Children are encouraged to understand and love people for their differences. They learn to accept every culture as unique and important. They also learn to behave respectfully and kindly towards themselves and others.
  8. Science – Science is all around us. Young children interact with the natural world everyday, investigating how smell like, how a leaf feels or what happens when you try to hold a chick. Children are also encouraged care for plants.
  9. Art and Music – Painting, colouring, drawing, singing and playing an instrument
  10. Technology – Introduction to computers

Pre – Primary: Age 4 to 6 years

PP1 (Class of 4 to 5 years)

Here,children use real objects to increase precision and concentration.

  1. Devotion and circle time – This includes praying, singing, dancing, telling bible stories, introduction and greetings, reciting days of the week, months of the year
  2. Language – Matching sound to pictures, sound to sound, pictures to pictures colouring pictures, sounds recognition a-z, modelling, reading three letter words, naming pictures, scribbling with crayons, pattern writing, letter formation
  3. Number work – Formation of numbers, number value, writing numbers, counting 0-30 and beyond, simple addition and subtraction, colouring, feeling numbers, joining the dots, number rods, sequin boxes,decimals
  4. Technology – Chidren are encouraged to learn and work with computers
  5. Pattern work – this is where children are taught how to do different patterns like zigzag, wavy, straight line, circles
  6. Practical work – use of work space, handling apparatus like scissors, cutting along straight/curved/zigzag lines, sharpening pencils, tracing objects, dressing frames, expression of needs, carrying materials
  7. Sensorial – Touching tablets and fabrics, pink towers, long stairs ,broad stairs, colour boxes 1 and 2.This helps in differentiating sizes and weight, how to hold with fingers the small cubes, how to grasp the largest cube, controlling arms and fingers so that tower doesn’t fall, and has the good feeling of completing the task.
  8. Culture – Sorting with a magnet, sink and float filtration, sieving, blowing bubbles, nature walks and excursions, care of plants, body parts, birds
  9. Art and craft – hand printing, colouring, use of objects

PP2 (Class of 5-6 years)

  1. Devotion and circle time – News telling, Bible stories
  2. Language – reading and writing four letter words, double sounds blend, creative writing, spelling, copying and reading sentences, make words, capital letters A-Z, name and draw pictures
  3. Number work – Missing numbers, shapes, arranging from small to big and vice versa, addition and subtraction, tens and ones, naming numbers, writing numbers in words
  4. Technology – Chidren are encouraged to learn and work with computers
  5. Practical life – table manners, serving and sharing food, care of self, sweeping
  6. Sensorial – Binomial cubes, trinomial cubes, geometric solids, stereo gnostic exercises, constructive triangles
  7. Kiswahili – Herufi kubwa na ndogo,vokali, kutunga maneno, kujaza pengo, maumbo, silabi, nambari, imla, wanyama wa nyumbani na pori
  8. Culture – domestic and wild animals, compass,continents,senses,time
  9. Art and craft – colouring, printing, making objects

NB: Physical education includes free race, bottle hockey, kangaroo race, obstacle/passing bottles, singing games, relay, bean bag race, football, spooning race etc

Primary School

Grade 1 (Class of 6 to 7 years)

  1. Devotion and circle time – News telling, Bible stories
  2. Language – missing letters, pink series, pink sentences and pictures, blue series materials, matching blue words and pictures, word lists, sentence cards and storybooks, green series materials
  3. Number work – Cards and counters, numeral cards, counting with numeral cards and beads, addition subtraction division, fraction , time ,length
  4. Technology – Computer studies is a core activity in primary school.
  5. Culture – body parts, care of body, sink and float, magnetism, puzzle map of the world, parts of a plant.
  6. Art and craft – moulding, cutting and pasting objects, drawing and painting
  7. Practical life – dressing frames, care of self, cutting exercises, pasting and gluing,
  8. Sensorial – color box 3, arranging dark to light colors, touch fabrics, baric tablets(blind folds), sound boxes , matching sounds, smelling jars, geometrical solids, tessellations, construction triangles

Admissions

Our academic year runs annually from January to December.

It is divided into three terms

  • January to March – Term 1
  • May to July – Term 2
  • September to November – Term 3

We also run a holiday program during April and August every year. Admissions are termly and children are allowed to join at the beginning of each term

Admission Requirements

  • Application form (Completed) – Download Application Form
  • Copy of Birth Certificate
  • Copy of Immunization Card ( both sides)
  • 2 colour Passport photos
  • Copy of Medical Records indicating any allergies
  • 2 Sets of extra clothing, diapers & baby wipes  (For children who are not potty trained yet.  Older children to have 1 set.)
  • Children must be in full school uniform at the beginning of the school term that they are going to turn 3 years
