Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has praised teachers for their patriotism as well as their savings culture through cooperative societies to harness money for future financial stability.

The Deputy President went on to say that the administration intends to fill the teachers’ shortage by hiring at least 116,000 new teachers. The government has employed almost 56,000 teachers this year.

He stated that they are working with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to gradually convert contract teachers to permanent and pensionable status, but that funding restrictions have delayed implementation.

“This is because we appreciate the fact that achieving the recommended ratio reduces the burden on teachers, directly improving quality,” he went on to say.

He was accompanied by Florence Bore, the Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection, and KNUT officials led by Secretary General Collins Oyuu and Chairman Patrick Karinga.

Mr. Oyuu, for his part, stated that the union will continue to support the Kenya Kwanza administration, highlighting the government’s accomplishments in streamlining the education sector and boosting teachers’ welfare.

Education matters have been streamlined under the Kenya Kwanza administration, according to Mr. Oyuu. He highlighted improvements in learners’ capitation and the notable employment of a record 56,000 teachers in a single year.

Mr. Oyuu expressed confidence in the work of the Presidential Working Party and its role in facilitating the smooth implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

He emphasized the supportive stance of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and teachers towards the government. Mr Oyuu clarified that KNUT is not a political entity and affirmed its commitment to collaboration rather than opposition.

He underlined the importance of maintaining a cooperative relationship with the government for effective negotiations and dialogue.
