Revealed: 2022 TSC-Counties With The Highest Teaching Job Opportunities! Teacher Shortage expose'

One of the major successes of the current government on matters education is the increased  enrolment of the learners in institutions of basic education. This has been achieved through the introduction of Free Primary Education For all since the inception of the Kibaki led government way back in 2002. This policy of acheiving education for all received a major boost when the subsequent governments gradually made Secondary Education free especially for day schools.

The Current government increased the capitation form the initial 10,000 to a whopping 22,244 per year annually in the year 2017. This has seen hundreds of thousands of primary school children transition to secondary school every year. According to the World Economic Forum (2017) Kenya’s Education system was rated as the strongest on the African Continent. Similarly in 2018, The World Bank ranked Kenya the top country for Education outcomes  scooping the first position out of the 43 mainland countries. This folowed a win for Kenya when a Kenyan got named as the most outstanding teacher in the world and awarded the most coveted prize of $1million!

However, these milestones in education have not been achieved without  a myriad bottlenecks. For instance, the ever increasing stuident numbers has without saying strained the available teaching force. The Commission in charge of teachers in the country (TSC) has been unable to maintain the recommended student teacher ratio due to underfunding by the treasury. It is from this background that the employer has mapped out regions and counties with the highest teacher shortages with an aim of plugging in the shortages especially with the MOE implementation of the new curriculum (CBC) that is teacher intensive.

List Of Counties With Acute Primary And Secondary Teacher Shortages !

  • WEST POKOT
  • KITUI
  • NAROK
  • BUNGOMA
  • KILIFI
  • MURANG’A
  • BOMET
  • SIAYA
  • MIGORI

TSC will be informed by the list above when determining vacancies in her future recruitment drives. The Commission also considers Kakamega County as one of the worst hit Counties with Teacher shortage. Others as enlisted above are priamary and secondary Schools in West Pokot, Kitui, Narok, Bungoma, Kilifi, Muranga, Bomet, Siaya and Migori.

Similarly under the category of Secondary Schools in the republic, Bungoma County takes the first place fololowed by Kisii, Homabay, Nakuru, Kitui, Makueni, Turkana, as well as Trans Nzoia. It should also be noted that schools located in Nort Eastern Kenya have always experienced acute shortages of teachers following constant attacks by bandits and the insurgence of terror-related incidences.

Consequently, the teachers’ employer is anticipated to  consider these regions as it seeks to hire over 6,000 intern teachers with an aim of pugging in the acute shortage. It is in the public domain, that treasury has allocated the commission 1.2 billion shillings in this fiscal year 2022/2023 to help in the recruitment of the intern tutors who will work alongside their permanent and pensionable counterparts.

This is on a backdrop of huge financial constraints facing the commission which hinders her from meeting the required teacher-to-student ratio. The teacher-student ratio keeps on widening especially with the government’s 100 percent transition strategy

The TSC Boss Dr. Nancy Macharia, further clarified that the commission wants to allocate more spaces to sub-county schools in the next Recruitment. This is because these schools often admit a large number of pupils, roughly 67 percent of children who transition from elementary to secondary school also contribute. Consequently more human resources should be allocated to help handle learners appropriately and effectively in order to achieve positive outcomes from curriculum implementation.
