Overall Job Purpose

The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for the following;

  • All of the Bank’s fiscal operating results utilizing generally accepted accounting principles, such as cost accounting, budgets, and regulatory agency and government reports ensuring the safeguard of Bank assets.
  • The role holder will provide guidance to senior management on fiscal control and profitability; prepare, present and interpret financial reports to senior management; adheres to tax laws and regulatory compliance to properly reflect the financial position of the group.
  • He/She will direct the finance divisional activities; provide leadership, training and supervision within the division; provide a high level of customer relations and service; and ensure compliance with Bank policies and procedures.
  • The position of Chief Financial Officer assists in attaining established Bank and department financial goals, perform supervisory duties of department staff, coordinate staff for coverage in all related areas of the division. 

Principle Accountabilities

1. Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Develop board approvals, strategic financial direction and positioning to ensure the group’s profitable growth and success
  • Reporting on the economic and other relevant factors, influencing judgement in the formulation or modification of corporate strategy, policy and financial management.
  • Ensure integrity and courage in the provision of consistently robust advice to the board, shareholders, the Group CEO and EXCO.
  • Prepare annual operating plans, and multi-year modeling (3-5 yrs.) business plans using forecasting tools, ensuring that adequate measures are factored to achieve business goals.

2. Financial Management

  • Lead the achievement of the group’s financial goals as per approved corporate plan, and consistently meeting the key performance indicators
  • Maintain a strong financial position of the group, ensuring that there is an appropriate balance of long-term and short term finance, and in compliance with the statutory requirements and reporting.
  • Keeping the activities of the group in all sections under general review with particular reference to the conformity of the current and cumulative “actual” position with budgets.
  • Preparation and implementation of operating (OPEX) and capital expenditure (CAPEX)
  • Drive adequate liquidity requirements for business delivery
  • Actively identify key business performance indicators, and ensure trends are understood, and negative variances addressed
  • Financial reporting on P&L, Balance Sheet, Cashflows e.t.c
  • Identify, plan and enlist funding options for the business
  • Oversee the procurement function
  • Co-chair the Asset Liability Committee (ALCO) and oversee Asset Liability and Funds Management to establish and maintain contingency funding plans including adequacy and availability of funding sources
  • Manage the Bank’s interest rate risk position and ensure compliance with all policy and regulatory requirements by overseeing interest rate risk modeling, including Interest and Economic Value simulations to ensure the model assumptions are well supported and documented
  • Monitor the Bank’s balance sheet and capital levels, ensure capital conforms to Bank Policy and regulatory requirements and advise Bank leadership, board and ownership of any changes that may impact capital levels

3. Corporate Governance, Risk Management and compliance

  • Ensure a strong risk, compliance, internal audit and financial governance framework is embedded across the group. Foster the right culture for compliance monitoring in line with legislation, regulatory requirements
  • Identify strategic and operational risks, ensure mitigation strategies are in place, and as appropriate, take action to minimize any actual potential impact.
  • Engage with peers, vendors, regulators and outside professionals to stay abreast of current trends and innovations applicable to the banking environment.

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting/Finance.
  • Masters Qualification in Business Management or a relevant field.
  • CPA (K) qualification
  • Over 15+ years’ working experience, 10+ of which will be in a Senior executive leadership position.
  • Track record of attaining targets of business growth and profitability in the financial services / banking sector and/or in FMCG sector.
  • Have appreciation and operating knowledge of the local and regional financial services industry, market and global trends and challenges
  • Sound understanding of statutory and regulatory requirements of corporate governance, business and financial services
