Govt to Employ 2,000 TVET Trainers Next Year — Machogu.

According to Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, the Ministry of Education will hire an additional 2,000 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) tutors next year.

Mr Machogu stated that the additional instructors will help to alleviate the shortage of trainers in TVET institutes.

Speaking at the Eldoret National Polytechnic’s graduation ceremony on Wednesday, Machogu said his ministry hired 1,300 tutors this year to satisfy the training demands of the growing number of students enrolling in TVET institutions.

The Education Ministry is retraining TVET trainers to teach the recently implemented Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET).

He complimented the new TVET curriculum, saying it will prepare competent graduates for jobs in Kenya and other nations.

He stated that more students qualified to attend universities this year but chose to enrol in TVET institutions instead.

Machogu reported that 9,000 students with university entry grades chose TVETs this academic year.

The Ministry of Education is collaborating with Germany in the new training model, according to the CS. He mentioned that the President, William Ruto, has secured job opportunities for the youth in Germany, emphasizing the need to meet international standards in their training.

Machogu challenged TVET institutions to collaborate with industry actors to close existing skill gaps.

The CS urged TVET graduates to put their abilities to use to create more jobs.

Chief Principal Charles Koech of Eldoret National Polytechnic announced that all students who joined in the September intake have been enrolled in the new Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) program. Additionally, Koech mentioned that the university has retrained 350 instructors to teach under the CBET framework.

He claimed that the institutes had made significant advances in technologies, including an Artificial Intelligence farm machine.

“Our training will continue to be tailor-made to industry demands,” the principal added.

Eldoret National Polytechnic Governing Council Chairman Paul Murgor praised the Ministry of Education for allowing the expansion of the institution’s training facilities to satisfy market demands.

Dr Murgor stated that the polytechnic had inked a collaboration agreement with textile maker Rivatex East Africa, among others, to improve competency training.

Stanley Kiptis, Chairman of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority, stated that all TVET institutions are prepared to award prior learning certifications to qualified Kenyans.

Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor John Barorot, County Assembly Speaker Philip Muigei, and Kesses MP Julius Ruto attended the ceremony.
