The school of pharmacy is located at Kenyatta National Hospital. Pharmacy training in the University of Nairobi was established in 1995.Before that time it was a department in the Faculty of Medicine comprising of 4 sections namely; pharmacognosy, Pharmacology, pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

BACHELOR OF PHARMACY(B.PHARM)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have satisfied the University’s general admission criteria of a mean grade C+ (plus) in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E). A minimum C+ (plus) grade pass will be mandatory in each of the cluster subjects.

The cluster subjects for Bachelor of Pharmacy in K.C.S.E are as follows:

  1. Biology
  2. Chemistry
  3. Physics or Mathematics
  4. English or Kiswahili

Eligibility for consideration for admission into the Module II Bachelor of Pharmacy programme shall be governed by the  following  admission requirements, outlined under each category:

          KCSE (8.4.4 System of Education)

Applicants must have obtained an average cluster weight of B- in the subjects shown below provided that no subject in this cluster shall have a      grade below C+:

                        Alternative A

                         -Chemistry

                         – Biology

                         – Maths/Physics

                         – English/Kiswahili

                         Alternative B

                         – Biological sciences

                         – Physical Sciences

                         – Mathematics

                         – English/Kiswahili

G.C.E/A-Level

                 A minimum of two Principal passes in Biology and Chemistry 

                 And a subsidiary pass or credit pass at ‘O’ level in physics or Mathematics.

                             Biology                                  – Principal

                            Chemistry                               – Principal

                            Physics/Mathematics           – Subsidiary

                            General paper                     – Pass

International Baccalaureate  (IB) Diploma

C (plain) mean grade in KCSE with an average cluster weight of 32 points in relevant subjects as shown in (3.2) above.

In addition, a pass of not less than 5 at IB level in each of the KCSE subjects shown in (3.2) above.

Diploma in Biological Sciences

A minimum O level Division II with credit passes in the following subjects:

                                    – Biology

                                    – Chemistry

                                    – Physics/Mathematics

                                     or                                          or

                                     – Biology                                  Biological Sciences

                                    – Physics with Chemistry         Physical Sciences

                                    – Mathematics                           Mathematics

                                     OR

 C mean grade in KCSE with an average cluster weight  of 32 points in relevant subjects as shown in (3.2) above,

In addition, they should have a credit pass in the following qualifications from the Kenya Medical Training College or any other recognised training institution Diploma in

  • Pharmaceutical Technology
  • Laboratory Technology
  • Clinical Medicine
  •  Radiology
  •  Basic and/or Advanced Nursing
  •  Public Health/Environment Health
  • Dental Sciences

 Holders of any degree in Biological Sciences from the  University of Nairobi or equivalent qualifications from a recognised University.

Holders of other qualifications deemed to be equivalent to (2.1 – 2. mentioned above.

 Applicants from non-English speaking countries must sit and pass English  assessment examination set and administered by institutions recognised by University of Nairobi Senate.

MASTERS PROGRAMS

MASTER OF PHARMARCY (CLINICAL PHARMACY)

MASTER OF PHARMACY (PHARMACEUTICAL ANALYSIS)

Admission Requirements

The candidates eligible for admission into the program shall fulfil the following conditions:-

(a) Be in possession of a bachelor of pharmacy degree from the University of Nairobi or any other Institution recognized by the University of Nairobi’s Senate and for this purpose the degree should be registerable by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya.

(b) Shall have completed one year of internship in an institution recognized by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.

DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MOLECULAR PHARMACOLOGY

Admission Requirements

The common regulations for the Masters Degrees of the University of Nairobi shall apply.

Applicants eligible for admission into the programme shall have the following minimum qualifications.

i.  Holders of: Bachelor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, Bachelor of Dental Surgery and Bachelor of Science in Nursing. 

  ii.    Holders of at least Upper Second class Bachelor of Science in Physiology or Biochemistry.

  iii   Holders of a Lower Second Class Bachelor of Science degree in the disciplines mentioned in 2.2. (ii) Above plus a Post Graduate Diploma in a relevant area or three years research experience.

  iv.   Holders of equivalent qualifications from institutions recognised by the Senate of the University of Nairobi

MASTER DEGREE OF PHARMACY IN PHARMACOEPIDEMIOLOGY AND PHARMACOVIGILANCE

Admission Requirements

The Common Rules and Regulations for Masters Degrees of the University of Nairobi shall apply.

Applicants eligible for admission into the programme shall have the following minimum qualifications.

Holders of Bachelor of Pharmacy degree of the   University of Nairobi.

Registered with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board or with the relevant regulatory body.

Holders of any equivalent qualification from institutions recognized by Senate of the University of Nairobi.

Applications open in April every year and you should try to submit an application as soon as possible after that date.

Current learners at school must make sure that all examination results from class 8 tp form four are submitted.
