Will Knec Finally Bow to Pressure and Increase Payment for Examiners?

The last time the Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, bowed to pressure from examiners and decided to increase the payment rates per script was in 2019 December.

Since then, things have not been the same owing to the harsh economic times ushered in by the Covid-19 pandemic and the political transition from Uhuru Kenyatta’s government to President Ruto’s.

In spite of KUPPET’s strike notice aimed at fighting for better pay for 2022 KCSE examiners,  the council has proceeded with the recruitment process of 2022 examiners before revising payment rates per day.

Following the 2019 KCSE examiners strike that bore fruits, the examination body was prompted to increase the rate per paper for Business Studies Paper 2 from 46 to 52. The examiners were however demanding a minimum of Sh68 per script.

KNEC further communicated to KCSE 2019 examiners for other subjects on the new rates. “Please note that the Council has reviewed script rate..,” reads the communique sent via SMS to all examiners.

In the new rates, Biology paper three examiners will now be paid Sh50 per script marked while their computer paper one counterparts will pocket Sh54 per script.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, KUPPET, had on Friday given an ultimatum for KNEC to pay all examiners a flat rate of Sh100 per script; for all subjects, lest it faces industrial action. “We demand that the pay be increased to Sh100 per script,” Said KUPPET Secretary General, Akello Misori, while adding that the teachers were receiving low perks despite carrying out an important National exercise.
