Automotive Engineering
Automotive section was started in 1965 with the aim of training small scale entrepreneurs in skill upgrading and self employment. The department is one of the ten technical departments that make KITI. It has over the years produced qualified technicians and artisans. The department continually endeavors to come up with market driven courses.
Sectional Objectives
- To develop necessary skills on repair and maintenance of automobiles.
- To give trainees an opportunity to work in the automotive industry.
About the course
The course combines both practical and theory sessions. Some of the subjects you will study include:
(a) Tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems fault diagnosis and routine maintenance:
Tyre wear patterns that indicate faults in other systems; types and routine maintenance for wheel bearings; faults in braking and suspension systems; operating principles and routine maintenance for power steering systems.
(b) Engine fault diagnosis and routine maintenance:
Faults for spark ignition and diesel engines, mechanical, cooling and internal heating and air filtration systems; adjustment methods for fuel injected and carburetor systems, diesel injection systems; operation and common faults for electronic and conventional ignition systems.
(c) Transmission fault diagnosis and routine maintenance:
Common faults in
- Final drives,
- Drive shaft systems,
- Operating principles of automatic transmissions,
- Routine maintenance of automatic transmission,
- Manual transmissions as well as clutch systems.
(d) Electrical and electronic systems fault diagnosis and routine maintenance:
Common faults and testing methods for:
- Battery charging,
- Starting system and
- Auxiliary systems.
Health and safety:
Ensure your own actions reduce risks in the automotive environment.
Assessment criteria
Through coursework, practical exercises and an end of term and/or national examination administered by Kenya National Examinations Council (K.N.E.C.) or National Industrial Training Authority (N.I.T.A.).

Electrical And Electronics Engineering
KITI Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department. This is a Department that is training over two hundred and thirty (230) Technicians and artisans every year. Our programmes have continued to attract nationwide recruitment .We are determined to play a major role in Vision 2030 by boosting the energy sector in the field of Electrification and Solar Energy supplies and also maintenance of the systems. Our capacity to train innovative and creative Technicians for the industries cannot be underrated. We are providing modern skill training that is required on the job market. Appended below are our objectives, programmes and courses offered in this department.
DEPARTMENTAL OBJECTIVES
- To provide knowledge of the fundamental laws of electricity
- To improve performance by ten per cent over the next two years
- To train 300 qualified and innovative Electrical and Electronics Technicians who are well prepared for self employment and for the job market every year.
- To train 200 solar PV Technicians who are highly qualified, innovative, creative and enterprising every year.
- To provide tailor made courses in the field of Electrical/Electronics for the semi-skilled labour force in the market for a maximum period of one year.
- To train over one hundred computer maintenance and mobile phone Technicians every year to meet the market requirements.
