Evelyn College of Design is on of the best fashion design schools in Kenya. Evelyn College of Design was founded in 1976 as the first design college in East and Central Africa. It has since then broadened the scope of education provided.

Evelyn College of Design attracted, and still does, students from all over Africa e.g Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, Ethiopia, Namibia and elsewhere. Since its inception, Evelyn College of Design has perfected the training in clothing construction, fashion and textile design not to mention Interior and Graphic design courses.

Fashion Design Courses Offered at Evelyn College of Design

Fashion design involves the originating and making of outfits and accessories customized to clients’ measurements and taste. Fashion is something that which comes from within. At Evelyn college of design our fashion design course brings out the artist in you. It allows the students to discover their innate qualities related to fashion and designing, and take their passion for fashion to the next level. Our Fashion designing course aims to combine creativity of artistic minds with technical proficiency. An integrated approach towards creative applications is provided through theoretical classes and practical trainings. Students are taught about colours, fabrics, pattern making and cutting, market trends, styling and accessory design giving the learner everything they need to become an accomplished fashion designer, Stylists, Consultants, Apparel Merchandisers, Textile and Fabric designer, Quality Auditors and many more.

COURSE PATHWAYS

PEARSON BTEC LEVEL THREE
Four terms, 14 weeks each with a Total of 18 Units covered. Term 1&2 each covers 5 Units; Term 3&4 each covers 4 Units. Achieved accreditation Pearson BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design.
Learners do not get an exemption from first year Foundation at University

PEARSON BTEC LEVEL FOUR
Two terms, 14 weeks each with a Total of 8 Units covered. Term 1&2 each covers four (4) Units. Learners achieve a Pearson BTEC Higher National Certificate in Art & Design

PEARSON BTEC LEVEL FIVE
Two terms, 14 weeks each with a Total of 6 Units covered. Term 1&2 each covers three (3) Units.

Learners Achieve a Pearson BTEC Higher National Diploma in Art and Design and an exemption from first year Foundation at the discretion of the university’s enrolment requirements.

ONLINE SHORT COURSE IN FASHION DESIGN

a) Sewing machine operation
This is a 4-week short course that equips the learner with basic skills in the use of sewing machines both treadle (manually pushed using legs) and electrical sewing machines. As a bonus the learner will also learn how to use the overlock machine used to neaten fabric edges.
The learner will also learn various machine faults and remedies to help give a wholesome experience at the end of the course. The course is geared towards learners interested in our fashion and interior design courses where a knowledge of sewing is vital.

b) Cushion making
This course takes 6 weeks and equips learners with skills in conceptualizing and executing creative, innovative and functional or decorative cushions. A Prerequisite to this unit is sewing machine operation for learners with not prior skills in this area.

c) Free-hand Pattern making 1
This is the perfect 12 week course for many an aspiring fashion designer or just DIY creative out there. Learners have the opportunity to come up with patterns for women and young girls’ clothing and adapt and execute these patterns into actual wearable garments. It is important
that the learner already know how to use a sewing machine at this stage.

d) Free-hand Pattern making 2
This is a continuation of the free hand pattern making 1 course with a similar 12-week duration. Here the learner develops skills in male and young boys pattern drafting and garment construction. The same prerequisite sewing machine operation course applies.

e) Metric Pattern making and Garment construction
This short course takes 12 weeks and unlike the freehand pattern making course, the learner uses worldwide standard pattern making techniques to generate patterns and construct garments. Sewing machine operation is a prerequisite to this unit for learners without that skill.

f) Pile weaving
The Pile weaving short course takes 8 weeks and equips learners with skills in fabric construction using one particular technique which is the pile weave. A pile weave is basically a construction where yarns or another medium protrude from the base they are being applied, what would be called a “shaggy rug” if used to create rugs or mats. This course is perfect for those with an entrepreneurial spirit and those DIY funs

g) Sewing technology
This is a 4-week short course that imparts professional skills to learners in using a variety of sewing equipment including different types of sewing machines and a variety of overlock machines. The learner also has the opportunity to gain practical knowledge in machine faults and remedies as well as sewing equipment maintenance.

h) Fashion Illustration 1
Fashion illustration or fashion drawing is a 4 week course perfectly tailored for fashion designers. It is important that any aspiring designer has the ability to convey their design ideas in from of drawings. This short course will equip learners with the skills to properly illustrate the fashion figure using correct proportions and industry accepted standards. It is important to note that this course is open to even learners who do not consider themselves an “artists”. The course is geared to equip you with skills at which ever level of drawing you may be at.

i) Fashion Illustration 2
The second part of this short course further develops the skills learned in fashion illustration 1 by teaching the learner a wide range of rendering techniques (which simply means ways to make the fashion figures more attractive) that bring the illustrations to life and further meet industry standards. Learners also learn how to add accessories to the fashion croquis (fashion figure) and make it more practical for the industry.

j) Curtain making
This is an 8-week short course geared at imparting skills in a facet of interior design namely interior decoration with a bias towards curtain making. The learner will gain skills in fabric estimation for different types of curtains and sheers plus pelmet (curtain box) designs. Skills in different header application to curtains will also be gained. A prerequisite to this course for those learners who cannot use a sewing machine will be sewing machine operation.

k) Motif Generation
This 4-week short course is suitable for all leaners who would like to learn how to come up with unique one of a kind patterns for either fashion, interior or graphics areas of specialization. Motifs (single unit of a pattern) are derived using both manual (by hand) and digital means (by computer) and depending on your area on specialization will be executed using suitable mediums specific to those areas.

l) Fabric Decoration – Batik
This Fabric decoration short course has a duration of 6 weeks and imparts the leaner with skills in applying color to fabrics using fabric dyes and wax. Designs achieved can then be applied in various ways as per the learner’s preference and interests.

m) Fabric Decoration – Tie-dye
Tie and dye is part of the 6-week fabric decoration course and this time the leaner applies color to fabrics using fabric dyes on different tied fabric designs to create interesting one of a kind designs. The short course is perfect for DIY funs and designers regardless of their specialization including those with an entrepreneurial spirit.

n) Fabric decoration -Block Printing
Another facet of fabric decoration, block printing is an 8-week short course that introduces and imparts skills to learners in the art of applying decorative motifs and patterns to fabric using a block or plate and fabric colors in which the motif is cut out or curved out on the block or plate and stamped on the fabric. A prerequisite to this unit is motif generation.

o) Fabric decoration- Screen Printing 1
This is also an 8-week short course in the string of fabric decoration courses. The learner in will develop skills in screen printing and as the name suggests a screen with mesh fabric applied is used to transfer motifs to fabric. This course is divided into two due to the vast number of techniques in this area in which this first section starts with easier techniques with the second section moving to more advance techniques and reagents. A Prerequisite for this unit is Motif generation.

p) Fabric decoration- Screen Printing 2
The prerequisite for this 8-week short course is screen printing 1 and motif generation as this
is a more advanced learning experience in screen printing.

q) Soft Furnishing 1
Soft furnishings 1 is a 12-week course covering curtain and cushion making in a singular learning experience. Sewing Machine operation is a prerequisite for this course. The course is geared to leaners who want to acquire skills over a short period of time without having to attend two separate courses.

r) Soft Furnishing 2

Soft furnishings 2 is also a 12-week short course that covers bed covers\ throws and duvet cover construction and design as well as bed sheets and pillow cases and cushion covers. The prerequisite unit is sewing machine operation for leaners who cannot use sewing equipment.

s) Jewelry design
This is a 6-week short course where the learner gains skills in accessory design with a bias to jewelry design. The learner will gain skills in design conceptualization, material and equipment selection and practical execution of various jewelry pieces. The unit is geared towards all
artists and DIY enthusiasts.
