The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has unveiled the official timetable and guidelines for the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Qualifying Test Examination.

General Instructions

The examination is scheduled to commence promptly at 8:30 a.m., and candidates are strongly advised to arrive punctually.

The duration allocated for each paper is explicitly indicated next to the paper name, and it is important to note that no extra time will be permitted.

In the event of any inconsistencies, the time stated on the question paper should be regarded as accurate. The time allocated for reading through the questions is integrated into the total examination time, unless specific instructions in the paper indicate otherwise.

Instructions and Guidelines

Sub-County Examination Officers are urged to ensure that candidates diligently read and adhere to the provided instructions and guidelines. Candidates must fully comprehend the implications of examination irregularities or misconduct.

Instructions to Candidates

Candidates are reminded of the following essential instructions:

Arrive at the examination room 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. Absolute punctuality is crucial, as latecomers may require a compelling reason and may not receive a paper if they are more than half an hour late.

Verify that the question paper they received matches the one they registered for.

Pay close attention to any general instructions on the first page of the paper.

Write their name and index number on the answer booklet.

Write on both sides of the paper, except in the margins.

Clearly indicate the question number at the beginning of each answer.

Use black or blue ink for writing; pencils are only allowed for diagrams. Candidates should also bring mathematical and drawing instruments for subjects where they will be needed.

Carefully read each question to avoid wasting time on irrelevant information.

Submit their answer booklet promptly when instructed to do so.

Caution to Candidates

Candidates must adhere to the following cautionary rules:

Candidates may only leave the examination room before the allocated time if they obtain special permission from the supervisor. Furthermore, it is strictly forbidden to take any question papers out of the examination room. Candidates must also avoid leaving written materials or answers in a position accessible to other candidates to prevent unfair assistance.

Candidates or outsiders are not allowed to engage in any form of communication during the examination.

Within examination centres, possession of unauthorized materials or electronic devices, including cell phones, is strictly prohibited.

Penalty for Examination Irregularities

The KNEC Act No. 29 of 2012 stipulates penalties for examination irregularities, including result cancellations and legal consequences. KNEC therefore strongly advises candidates to uphold integrity and avoid any form of examination misconduct.
