The internship position is located at the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Africa (ROAF). The intern will work closely with human settlements advisors, and will participate in the management and visibility of projects / programs. He/She will report to the Human Settlements Officer in Charge of Francophone Countries at the Regional Office for Africa. The intern will support the implementation and monitoring of activities and projects in the following areas:

Housing and infrastructure design
Construction Methods and Management
Housing and slum upgrading
Research and capacity development
Technical Writing
Structural Analysis and Design
Urban planning and urban and regional planning
Basic social services (water, sanitation and renewable energy)
Online communication and monitoring

The UN-Habitat Civil engineering specialist internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the Supervision of Human Settlements Officer, the intern will:

– Assist in the design of advocacy and awareness tools.
– Assist in the development and implementation of the ROAF work plan tracking system.
– Track key indicators and monitor their reports and comments with partners, including with regional offices.
– Assist with research, development and design of projects.
– Prepare calculations, drawings, specifications, and quantity and cost estimates.
– Assist with the preparation of engineering drawings and documents as assigned.
– Assist with website and social media engagement .
– Perform other duties relevant to the candidate and ROAF,as determined jointly.

EDUCATION

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred Area of Studies: Civil engineering, Architecture, Geography, Urban Planning or any relevant field are preferred.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

LANGUAGES

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
