How many GSU barracks are there in Kenya?

GSU Training School

Mandate

To train staff to the highest possible standard of competency and integrity and to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms and dignity.

Functions:

(i). To offer basic training to GSU recruits.

(ii). To offer promotional courses to GSU officers.

(iii). To review GSU training curriculum.

(iv). To offer capacity building to GSU personnel.

(v). To be a research centre for emerging crimes.

(vi). To be a liaison centre with other training institutions.

(vii). To offer police science programs in collaboration with institutions of higher learning;

(viii). To run rehabilitation programmes for police officers

(ix). To establish, manage and utilise the existing satellite training centres in the counties for use by the Service.

Personnel and training

Initially, GSU members were drawn from the existing ranks of the Kenyan Police force. Apart from this, they were from a number of ethnic backgrounds, and were trained in the Kenya Police College and placed on a two-year tour of duty.

Today however, Gsu members are drawn from a wide range of ethnic platforms. In addition, all GSU members are trained at the GSU-specific Training School in Embakasi and its Field Training Camp in Magadi, on 10-month-long courses, with further 5-month long courses required for promotion.

GSU also sends its officers to Great Britain to be trained in such facilities as the Britannia Royal Naval College and Sandhurst.
