Certificate in Early Childhood Development and Education is a programme aimed at equipping teachers with skills relevant to teaching, setting up and managing ECDE Centres
Entry Requirements
The following shall be the minimum University entry requirements for admission to the Diploma course in early childhood.
C plain in KCSE
Certificate in ecde/ p1 certificate
Exemptions and Credit Transfers
Credit transfers may be given to students who have done similar courses from institutions recognized by the university senate
Programme Duration
Diploma in Early Childhood Education Programme shall be offered in six trimesters. Each of the trimesters shall have six units of three credit hours each. The research project shall be done in the 4th trimester and shall account for three credit hours and equivalent to one unit.
A candidate will be deemed to have passed an academic year after successful completion of all units offered in that year. The program is structured to take six trimesters one and ½ academic year including practicum/industrial attachment.

Program objectives
The aim of this programme is to improve the quality of primary school instruction and management. The specific objectives of the programme are to:
Enhance the teacher‟s subject content and pedagogical knowledge, skills and attitudes.
Enhance teachers‟ ability to handle two of the subject areas taught in primary schools, namely; a) Science, Agriculture, and Mathematics b) Social Studies and Languages.
Develop a primary school teacher who is creative and capable of discovering, understanding, controlling and adapting to new technologies.
Enable the primary school teacher to develop the child‟s ability in creative thinking, problem-solving and communication skills.
Develop a teacher‟s awareness, understanding and commitment to professional ethics, basic human rights and sound environmental.
vi) Develop a teacher‟s capacity to produce and use relevant learning materials.
Enhance a teacher‟s leadership and managerial skills.
Prepare teachers for further Education and training.
Admission Requirements
The candidate to be admitted must satisfy the following criteria:
A holder of KCSE with a minimum grade of D+ and P1 certificate for marginalized zones OR a holder of a mean grade of „C‟ plain and a P1 certificate C plain and above
