School of Nursing Sciences Courses Offered

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN NURSING (BSCN)

According to the syllabus for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing which was approved in 1991, the course is supposed to develop a liberally educated and self -directing individuals. Such individuals should be prepared to provide leadership in Nursing practice, Nursing Administration, Nursing Education, Research and Publication in their chosen area of specialization. Such individuals should be able to function effectively in a variety of settings, where the sick are cared for and where the health of individuals, families and communities is maintained and promoted.

Admission Requirements

  • Candidates for admission must obtain the prescribed minimum grades in K.C.S.E. in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and English or Kiswahili, or the following:
  • Biological Sciences, Physical Science, Mathematics, English or Kiswahili and one subject from group two of K.C.S.E.
  • Alternatively, admission may be granted to outstanding diploma holders from recognised Nursing Colleges. Such candidates must: Hold a diploma with credit or distinction from such Colleges.
  • Be supported in their application by a statement from the principal of that college to the effect that their performance in the diploma course was exceptionally good and that their understanding of basic sciences is such that they will be able to benefit from a degree course.
  • Any candidates currently employed shall have their application supported by a statement from their employer.

MASTERS PROGRAMS

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

The provision of quality nursing care is paramount in prevention of disease, promotion of health and management of diseases, in hospitals and communities.  In Kenya, the Nursing Profession is in need of nurses trained at higher levels to take up positions in clinical practice, research, and teaching.

Admission Requirements

The common regulations for the Masters degree in the University of Nairobi and the Faculty of Medicine shall apply.

Candidates eligible for admission into the Master of Science in Nursing shall have the following minimum qualifications.

(a)      Holders of Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  The candidate must be registered by the professional body or

(b)     Holders of any first degree recognised by the Senate of the University of Nairobi as being of comparable academic status, in addition to holding a Diploma in Nursing.  The candidate must be registered or registrable by the Nursing Council of Kenya.

Applications open in April every year and you should try to submit an application as soon as possible after that date.

APPLICATION FEES

An application fee must be paid for every application, except in the case of most graduates of UON. Please refer to the fee structure for more information.

SUBMITTING RESULTS AND DOCUMENTS

Current learners at school must make sure that all examination results from class 8 tp form four are submitted.

Transferring students should submit all transcripts and academic records as early as possible.
