The institution was made a National Polytechnic by legal order number 90 of May 2016 by the cabinet secretary of education in exercising the powers conferred by section 26(2) of Technical vocational education training TVET act 2013. The legal notice no 90 is known as Sigalagala National Polytechnic order of 2016. The polytechnic has the Main campus and other campuses; Kakamega Town campus and Maturu campus.
The polytechnic is mandated to offer courses at certificates, diploma and higher diploma levels at higher disciplines. The Polytechnic mainly produces middle level human resource that are well equipped with technical and business skills required in industry. The institution produces technicians and technologists who are expected to play a major role towards the attainment of the Kenya Vision 2030.
