CLASP: Communications Coordinator Job Vacancy 2021

CLASP is seeking a talented communications professional who is ready to take their experience to the next level with our growing team. The Communications Coordinator would report to the Nairobi-based Communications lead and work closely with an international team to support the implementation of a global public health campaign. This is a one-year position, with potential for renewal.

A successful candidate will demonstrate dedication to CLASP’s mission and theory of change and understand how an impactful communications portfolio can further that mission. They will bring experience in government partnerships and communications, as well as expertise developing and implementing awareness raising campaigns.

The ideal candidate will be an excellent writer, have the skills to convey information through writing, graphics, and visual storytelling, and know how to turn complex ideas into impactful and concise narratives. Experience working with governments (particularly Ministries of Health) in sub-Saharan Africa is highly encouraged. Native French speakers preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Communications Coordinator will support a global public health campaign, with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Execute communications projects:
    • Support the development of regional consumer awareness raising campaigns on public health and energy-related issues
    • Create persuasive presentations and communications materials targeted towards government agencies and other high-level stakeholders
    • Operate digital marketing and advertising:
  • Support campaign activities
    • Help hire consultants and local groups to run national communications activities which tie up into the global strategy
    • Research and implement innovative ways to communicate the campaign brand through digital media
  • Website management
    • Update and maintain the organization’s website
    • Create new website content with the campaign team
    • Operationalize new opportunities by developing and maintaining website editorial calendars
  • Graphic design
    • Design infographics and social media graphics
    • Turn technical content into easily digestible, persuasive graphics
    • Work with external graphic designers
  • Social media management
    • Develop persuasive social media content for diverse audiences (governments, industry actors, consumers)
    • Support a forward-thinking and coherent social media strategy across different feeds; ensure leverage and de-duplication; know about and develop content that grows our follower base and creates community
    • Track metrics to measure content popularity and impact over time
  • Project coordination: CLASP works through a variety of subcontractors. We collaborate often with graphic designers, copy editors, photo editors, other communications and fundraising consultants, and CLASP’s teams and subcontractors to ensure quality, accurate, and timely knowledge exchanges.
    • Support contract execution and oversee vendor management for communications projects
    • Collaborate across teams to bring together essential information (i.e. timelines, scope of work, budget)
    • Build trusting relationships with vendors—be a reliable resource and represent CLASP culture
  • Media outreach
    • Curate media contact lists
    • Develop stories for key placements in local, national, regional and international media outlets
  • Support donor reporting

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Fluent in Excellent written communication skills; proven ability in being able to take complex, technical ideas and turn them into compelling stories in a variety of formats: web, print publications, briefing papers, digital media, and social media all a plus; experience writing funding proposals ideal
  • Good visual eye; must be able to reproduce the campaign brand across multi- media
  • Effective team coordination skills; ability to collaborate and own processes to get results
  • Strong time management and organizational skills with ability to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time under tight deadlines
  • Confident and polished verbal and written communication skills; ability to connect with people in a diverse, international work environment
  • Strong work ethic and ability to take initiative with a drive to learn and grow on the job
  • Ability and willingness to travel once COVID restrictions are lifted
  • Ability to maintain composure, flexibility, and a sense of humor under tight deadlines.
  • Intellectual agility and a commitment to professional development
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Microsoft Office Suite applications; experience with HTML and CSS a plus

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or another relevant field preferred
  • 2-4 years of communications experience
  • Experience in or from an Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) country (preference for Nigeria or Ghana)
  • Experience in public health, energy, environment, and/or climate change fields
  • Preference for experience in online digital promotions, ads and campaigns to targeted consumer groups
  • Demonstrated experience writing for a donor audience and leading an editorial process with subject matter experts and teams on reporting or fundraising preferred
  • International experience preferred
  • Multi-lingual: fluency in English and French preferred

This position is full-time and based in the organization’s Nairobi, Kenya office. Occasional travel (up to 20% domestic and international) once COVID restrictions are lifted, as well as evening or weekend hours, may be required.
