Cavina School

By | January 18, 2022

Cavina School is a British Preparatory School located in Nairobi, Kenya for children aged three to thirteen years of all nationalities and backgrounds. Founded in 1950 by H Massie-Blomfield, the school has steadily grown from a small group of boys taught in the Headmaster’s home into a co-educational facility of over 200 children cared for by a highly qualified and deeply committed staff, covering a wide range of subjects and extracurricular activities.

Following the Common Entrance Syllabus, students in their final year sit a series of exams, which gain successful candidates entry into certain Secondary Schools both in Britain and Kenya

Cavina School Curriculum

THE PRE-PREP UNIT AND JUNIOR SCHOOL

Opened in 1996, the Pre-prep Unit is designed to provide a thorough foundation for children entering into Form I in the Junior School in a friendly and disciplined environment. Children enter PPI at the age of three and have half-day tuition for this first year. PPII and PPIII are full-day. Set on its own compound, the Pre-prep Unit is specifically designed for this age group. The Junior School, Forms I(Year II) and Form II(Year III), builds on this excellent foundation and here the children are encouraged to develop effective study habits and homework is introduced on a regular basis. Throughout both the Pre-Prep Unit and the Junior School, academic lessons are the responsibility of class teachers but the children will have access to specialist teachers for French, Music, Art, Computer Studies and Physical Education.

THE MIDDLE SCHOOL

In Form III, the children are introduced to specialist teachers for all academic subjects. The students also become actively involved in many other areas of school life, including team sports and clubs, which are held both during and outside of school hours. In Form IV, Latin lessons commence. Form V sees the Common Entrance Syllabus commenced in earnest in all subjects and the students are encouraged and guided into taking on more responsibility in the life of the school.
The Common Entrance is set in England and will represent a student’s first external examination.

THE SENIOR SCHOOL

Cavina stresses the importance of ‘finishing the course’. The students who have passed through the final year, with all its challenges, responsibilities and opportunities, are certainly more prepared to face Secondary Education than those who have not had the chance to take on a leadership role within the school. This culminates in many of the Senior Year accepting roles of Prefects and House Captains. Responsibilities include running House Assemblies and caring for and guiding the younger children while supporting the philosophy of the school.

It must be stressed that the Common Entrance Examination is not an end in itself but a preliminary part of the next academic hurdle, the General Certificate of Secondary.

Cavina School Extra Curricular

Cavina runs a large and comprehensive sports programme throughout the year both within the school and with other Preparatory Schools in Kenya. This includes;

BOYS: Cricket, Hockey, Football and Swimming

GIRLS: Rounders, Hockey, Netball and Swimming

Cavina is fortunate in having almost unlimited access to a local Sports Club that includes an outstanding cricket field, football fields, hockey pitches, Netball and tennis courts. The programme is structured in such a way that the majority of children in the Middle and Senior schools are involved with a team.

The school also has a swimming complex where all the children are given high quality instruction throughout the year, and in which both inter-house and inter-schools events are held.
