also admit those who have a credit pass/or a pass in any of the following certificate level training, agriculture, medical laboratory, food science, science laboratory, pharmaceutical technology from
recognized institutions or MMUST senate.

Duration of programme
The duration of the programme for the Diploma in Applied Biology shall normally be three academic years consisting of three modules where each module is defined as one academic year divided into two semesters where each semester is defined as fourteen (14) teaching weeks and practical sessions and two weeks for university examinations.

The Department of Mathematics offers a Bachelor of Science in Applied Statistics with Information Technology which is an instructional programme that provides classroom, laboratory and field experience in Statistics blended with information technology to exploit and harness knowledge for sustainable development. This programme strives to justify the utilitarian value of Statistics considering the choice of data and interpretation of the statistical measures

Applied statistics as a discipline is fundamental in policy formulation and decision-making. The programme includes courses that emphasize the application of statistical techniques to real-life situations using information technology. Such areas include Biological and Physical Sciences, Agriculture, Business, Finance, Economics, and Engineering among many other fields. Statistics as a discipline will empower the learners with analytical and computational skills that will give them critical insights into data.

Statistics has gained application in many fields such as technology (e.g. cryptology), engineering (e.g. reliability analysis), agriculture (e.g. design of Experiments and Sample Surveys), medicine (e.g. Statistical modelling), and economics (e.g. time series analysis and forecasting) among many others.

The program offers the learners an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for placement in these diverse fields. It also prepares them for further specialized training or studies.

Bachelor of Technology in Cosmetology

The program is natured by the Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry and will be housed in the Directorate of Technical & Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and partly at The Directorate of Science Technology Park and Industrial Linkages, which will host the Cosmetology and beauty industrial training park. Cosmetology focuses on personal and professional grooming, and body care and provides students with opportunities to explore cosmetology–related career opportunities.

The programme blends knowledge from the field of Cosmetology and Beauty Health Care practice. The curriculum for BTc. in Cosmetology is designed to equip students with integrated knowledge and skills from the modern ‘cosmetology with business approach’ in fostering the development of a wide range of cosmetology situations. The program aims to develop personnel with a high degree of creativity, and leadership skills and one who understands that cosmetology work is holistic with various aspects of beauty in life such as economic, social, political and spiritual.

Thus, through this curriculum, the learners will learn how to easily create a signature look for their customers and how to satisfy their styling wishes through the development of the learners’ hair-cutting, styling, and colouring skills. In this programme, you get taught how to master the perfect manicure and pedicure, as well as develop techniques such as nail shaping, art, and specialities like application and maintenance of acrylics. Also, with the learners’ new aesthetics and skin care skills they will meet their customers’ everyday beauty needs with facials, waxes, and makeup applications.

The programme teaches the skills of practising cosmetologists, like salon business skills, proper safety and sanitation practices, and hands-on experience to prepare learners to start their careers immediately upon graduating.

As an industry Cosmetology helps people overcome social and health problems, in the community setting such as facial beauty, physical health and relaxation. Holiday makers especially tourists are getting attracted to the world of beauty and environment in the context of life enhancement.

The integration of healthy living is a reflection of beauty; therefore the need for skills in health exercise is paramount to beauty training.

The academic programme Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Natural Resources Management integrates science and technology, use of ICT modes of lecture delivery, tutorials, appropriate hands-on laboratory and field courses and trips. Environment and natural resource managers apply scientific, economic and social knowledge to help society resolve issues surrounding the use of natural resources, the conservation of the environment and the impacts of development on the environment.

Our students get trained in the conservation and management of arid and semi-arid lands, fauna and flora, natural forests, water-catchment areas, wetlands, aquatic life and balancing environment, development and natural resource usage. The offered courses make students aware of and appreciate why people make certain decisions related to managing the environment and natural resources therein.

Our students get equipped with knowledge of environmental systems, learn to appreciate the need for sustainable use of natural resources for development and acquire skills and capacity for solving environmental problems.

Students use appropriate technology and interdisciplinary approaches in environmental conservation, management and ethics. Our students get equipped with the necessary skills to address environmental challenges and make informed decisions depending on the circumstances.

The Department of Mathematics offers an MSc in Applied Mathematics. The program seeks to prepare graduates who are knowledgeable enough and capable of joining the University as lecturers and/or any other organization that requires the application of Mathematical knowledge.

Applied mathematics is a field in mathematics that provides the student with a broad perspective on advanced mathematics and its applications. The program stresses a solid foundation in graduate-level mathematics as well as exposure to the use of mathematics in other disciplines. Currently, there is a high demand for Applied Mathematicians both in industry and academics, regionally and internationally. The Master of Science (M.Sc.) programme in Applied Mathematics is intended to produce graduates whose areas of specialization are broad enough to carry out research and, participate in national and international endeavors and disseminate knowledge through teaching.

The duration of the degree course shall normally be a minimum of two (2) academic years and a maximum of four (4) academic years or four (4) semesters (each lasting Fourteen weeks with 672 contact hours) unless Senate on the recommendation of the School Board approves exemption.

The program is designed to provide the student with a broad perspective and in-depth knowledge of advanced Applied  Mathematics and its applications in solving real-world problems in other disciplines.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Mathematics programme will provide training in different aspects of Applied Mathematics, equipping graduates with a range of mathematical skills in problem-solving, critically required in industry and generally in research. The graduates of the program will be able to think logically approach real-life problems in analytical and creative ways, and use Mathematics as a tool for innovations in Science and Technology. The program will also provide a broad-based knowledge of Applied Mathematics and its applications in mathematical and computational modelling.

The recent expansion of institutions of higher learning and the ever-growing demand for highly trained and competent staff will greatly benefit from the graduates of this programme.

Candidates may register for full-time or part-time doctorate programmes. Full-time program shall normally take three (3) academic years and a period not exceeding 5 academic years unless with prior approved deferment. Part-time program shall run for a period not exceeding seven (7) academic years, unless with prior approved deferment.
