Short Training

Academic Programmes

The purpose of Maasai Mara University Privately Sponsored Students Programme (PSSP) programme is to enable Kenyans and people of other nationalities to access university education even when they are not sponsored by government. Among others, PSSP seeks to support the government policy of improving access, equity and relevance of university education by providing learning opportunities to those who are eligible; support the University mission of providing quality education through innovative teaching, research and consultancy; enhance the university capacity to attract and retain staff by contributing to staff welfare; and to enhance corporate social responsibility of the university.

The Directorate of PSSP is charged with the responsibility of managing PSSP activities on day to day basis; coordinating recruitment of PSSP students; coordinating marketing of PSSP academic programmes and short courses; promoting quality assurance and standards for PSSP programme; and advising Departments / Schools on demand for existing or potential short courses.

It is against the above background that I am pleased to invite you to come and learn with us. We are in Narok County where the Maasai Mara National Reserve, home of the 7th Wonder of the World is found. Learning at Maasai Mara University is student-focused and is facilitated by highly qualified and supportive academic and administrative staff. Besides, students are represented at various levels of decision-making.

We have innovative market-driven academic programmes at Certificate, Diploma, Undergraduate, Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s and Doctoral levels. The programmes are housed in various departments of the university spread across the five Schools. These are School of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Business and Economics, School of Education, School of Science and Information Science, and School of Tourism and Natural Resources Management.

The programmes are offered at the Main Campus in Narok and various satellite campuses located at Narok Town, Bomet, Kisii, Kilgoris, Nyandarua, Nairobi, and Kajiado. We have three intakes per year, namely, April/May, August/September and December/January. The programmes are offered on a variety of modes depending on preference of students, location, and nature of programme: Full time (Monday – Friday 8.00am – 5.00pm); Evening (Monday – Friday 5.30pm – 8.30pm and Saturday); Weekend (Friday 5.30pm – 8.30pm, Saturday & Sunday 8.00am – 6.00pm); School Based (during the April, August & December School holidays); and Open, Distance and E-Learning (ODEL).

Short Training Courses
The Directorate of PSSP also offers Short Training Courses intended to enhance the capacity of participants to undertake their tasks and productivity. These include: Effective Supervision Course; Middle Level Managers Course; Training of Trainers (ToT); Women in Management Course; Finance for Non-Finance Managers Course; Management of Small Enterprises; Starting a New Enterprise; How to Prepare a Business Plan; Grant Proposal Writing; Fundraising and resource Mobilization; Effective Management of credit Schemes; and Gender and Development Course. The Directorate also designs and runs tailor-made courses based on specific needs of organizational clients.

1.0 Target Group

This course targets persons in the first level of management, who are charged with the responsibility of supervising others in the mainstream public service (government) agencies, quasi-governmental agencies like parastatals, private and public for-profit commercial (business) organizations, and non-profit organizations (NPOs). The course is suitable for Supervisors; Heads of Sections/Departments; Team/Group Leaders; Coordinators; and Administrators/Administrative Assistants.

2.0 Learning Outcomes
This programme will expose participants to a variety of personal and organizational development skills, knowledge and competences designed to improve the effectiveness of supervisors in the workplace and their working relationships with colleagues and clients. By the end of the training, participants should be able to:-
(i) Explain the principles and functions of management
(ii) Discuss the roles and responsibilities of a supervisor
(iii) Explain the requirements for effective communication
(iv) Examine the qualities of a good office report
(v) Discuss industrial and labour relations management
(vi) Explain the techniques of effective time management
(vii) Discuss ethical issues and effective Supervision
(viii) Discuss effective office management
(ix) Explain effective records management practices
(x) Discuss methods of handling conflicts in organizations
(xi) Highlight methods of staff motivation & team building

3.0 Course Delivery
Course delivery will be highly participatory. It will be facilitated by seasoned trainers from both the industry and academia. It will be delivered using modern training resources and participatory methods like case study, small group discussions, plenary discussions, and demonstrations.

4.0 Course Duration
The course will take 3 days and it is non-residential.

5.0 Cost. Fees
The cost of the training is Ksh.25,000/= per person which covers training materials, meals (lunch and tea), and a Certificate.
